To Middelfart City Council and the board of directors of EWII

We are a large group of citizens across Middelfart, Strib, Brenderup, Skrillinge, Ejby and Nørre Aaby who have had enough of the extremely hard water in our taps. With a hardness of up to 17–20 °dH, we experience major financial, personal and environmental costs every day.

The current answer that "every household can just buy private systems" simply will not hold in 2026. It creates inequality and is bad economics for the community.

With this petition, we demand that Middelfart Municipality and our consumer-owned supply, EWII, take responsibility and establish central softening of drinking water directly at the waterworks or the pipe network (e.g. to a target hardness of 8 °dH).

Why is central softening the only right solution?

• Social and economic justice for tenants: As a tenant in, for example, Civica, you are not allowed to install private systems. Tenants are forced to live with broken appliances and risk large, unfair financial penalties on their deposit at the move-out inspection because the lime eats away at the tiles.

• Enormous savings for homeowners: It is a waste of public money that thousands of private homeowners have to spend 15,000–20,000 DKK on private systems, expensive service agreements and tons of salt, when the task can be solved much cheaper and more efficiently for everyone together over the water bill.

• The green hypocrisy of the "Climate City": Middelfart brands itself as Denmark's leading Climate City. But the hard water forces the citizens to flush liters of harsh chemicals and descaling agents into the environment to keep the limescale down, while white goods have to be scrapped prematurely. It's anything but climate-friendly!

• Caring for our elderly and our health: Hard water dries out skin and hair. For our elderly citizens, it causes unnecessary skin problems and itching – and on top of that, the hard physical work of constant descaling, which arthritic hands cannot handle.

We want to preserve the good taste and healthy minerals, but we want to have lowered the calcium level to a modern, tolerable level. Modern technology makes it possible to get the best of both worlds!
